[How To] Use DosBox (Install Games from CD, Run Them, Create Shortcuts)

Update 1: Blog article about shortcuts is now up! See below example:

Update 2: Added note from youtube user: Example clarification from a user if you thought my video was confusing:

“I just got this thing working for Toonstruck on disc – this tutorial is pretty confusing if you don’t speak ‘computer geek’.

Heres what you do. Create a folder in your C: drive (your hardrive) call it ‘game’. and find out what drive your CD is in (mine is E)

Open DOSBOX and TYPE mount e e:/ -t cdrom hit enter and TYPE mount c c:/game hit enter and TYPE e: press enter, then TYPE dir and then just TYPE the corresponding .EXE file: (setup, install) Click enter and BAM. Simple.” – Courtesy of anakinthehutt
Per the website:
“DOSBox is a DOS-emulator that uses the SDL-library which makes DOSBox very easy to port to different platforms. DOSBox has already been ported to many different platforms, such as Windows, BeOS, Linux, MacOS X…

DOSBox also emulates CPU:286/386 realmode/protected mode, Directory FileSystem/XMS/EMS, Tandy/Hercules/CGA/EGA/VGA/VESA graphics, a SoundBlaster/Gravis Ultra Sound card for excellent sound compatibility with older games…

You can “re-live” the good old days with the help of DOSBox, it can run plenty of the old classics that don’t run on your new computer!

DOSBox is totally free of charge and OpenSource.”

  1. Thanks for replying, Dosbox just starts up normally and I checked the conf file and the properties of the shortcut. I even reinstalled DOSbox…

  2. Thank you for posting this tutorial but I have a question! I followed every step up to 'setup' and when I pressed enter I got this response: 'Illegal Command: setup'. What does this mean?

  3. Hey, im pretty dumb when it comes to all the c drive commands, i was wondering if you had skype whats app kik some sort of social app where you would be able to run through it with me as i a am a derp and i really want to play all my old games 🙁

  4. You should really just rewatch this video over and over. I go over it with enough steps that anyone can do this, even girls have done this too. My skype is versatileninja, but due to timezones, maybe hard to meet up.

  5. hello, I'm trying to install Hugo 1. I install it and it says type Hugo and the game will start. I type Hugo and then the logo of ITE (company that made Hugo) appear and then just black screen and the message reboot requested, quitting now and DOSbox close. What to do?

  6. When I type setup it says This program cannot be run in DOS mode. Trying to run sim theme park and since nothing else on the internet has worked, thought dosbox would work.

  7. I am desperate to do exactly what youre doing except on a mac…i am trying so hard to get Warcraft 2 running and it is beyond upsetting that I cant get it on here…please someone help me…

  8. Hey! Awesome tutorial, I got everything set up and running but when I click on single player it says the CD is not there.  Everything is as you have it, any tips for this?

  9. VERY useful video thank you for this upload.. I manage to follow your instructions up until 1:58 fine and correctly then on the DOSbox window the game (Theme Hospital) works but when attempting to install it simply says: Could not write files correctly, check your pathname is correct and check sandisk for errors. The disk is brand new (not a mark, scratch or scuff on it) and I have made a folder in my C (hard) drive saying hospital like it comes up automatically to install too. Is this a game fault or is there something I can do? This was one of my favourite childhood games I'd be thrilled to be able to play it once more. Thank you :)..

  10. So only the games listed on that website work with dosbox? I have a game called Trackmania Original, and I tried to run in compatibility mode many times didn't work, etc. This was my last resort. Will dosbox work and play this game?

  11. mounted d and c drives fine. d: mounted setup file for duke3d. c: for game directory. at the step where you enter D: then SETUP, i get the message ILLEGAL COMMAND : SETUP…any ideas?

  12. Hi, im having a problem with a thing called stack fault could you give me any advise how to make it read it?

Also if anyone has got any useful information send it to my email address

    [email protected]

Btw this is trying to run harpoon 2 from disc, such a shame because my dad really likes the game 🙂

  13. +projectphoenixmedia this is unrelated but i want to run a Japanese import cd rom game (nitro royale heroines duel) a physical copy on windows 8 do you by any chance know how? it originally runs on windows 2000/xp/vista.

  14. I did this exactly but it won't mount the cd. otherwise shortcut work. furthermore I edited the .conf file to just mount the drives and not start. and it still starts the game
